DNR and DNI
DNR means do not attempt CPR if the heart stops. DNI means do not place a breathing tube if breathing fails. These choices can be separate depending on the situation.
Comfort-focused care
Comfort-focused care means the priority shifts toward comfort, dignity, and symptom relief rather than burdensome attempts to prolong life.
The real question
The most important question is not just what can be done. It is whether a treatment has a realistic chance of helping the patient reach an acceptable outcome.
Questions to ask the treating team
- What is the best-case path if things go well?
- What is the most likely path?
- What is the worst-case path?
- Would CPR or a ventilator help in this specific situation?
- What would the patient consider an acceptable quality of life?
